Abstract

The WAG TSI defines requirements for devices used to secure semi-trailers on freight wagons. The device must hold the semi-trailer in a safe position by withstanding longitudinal, lateral, and downward vertical forces in accordance with the design operating state. Following a 2019 accident, in which a semi-trailer detached during a severe storm and struck an oncoming passenger train, Denmark introduced controls and restrictions that have now been accepted and included in the WAG TSI. Additionally, the device must lock semi-trailers by withstanding upward vertical forces caused by crosswinds at the minimum crosswind stability; in the absence of this data, the upward force must be at least 85 kN. This paper presents real-world tests of a device for securing a semi-trailer to a freight wagon, along with an assessment of its conformity with EU regulations.
